Secondary/Tertiary

Engineering Solutions

Engineering Solutions

Audience: Senior Secondary, FE
Subjects: Technologies, STEM

  • In engineering, every problem must be solved by following the steps of the design process. We’ve interviewed lead engineers on three real-world projects to find out how to solve real, unique challenges using engineering concepts.
  • This series will be released in the Secondary and FE libraries:
    • Designing Engineered Solutions
    • Impactful Materials
    • Testing Solutions
  • The videos are aimed at viewers from senior-secondary and beyond, hitting direct curriculum links for GCSE Design Technology and Engineering.
  • Even the most disengaged students will be inspired by the real-world case studies explored in the series, as we interview the lead designers responsible for the projects. They explain the ups and downs of engineering in each stage of the design process. If there’s one message about design that is true for all three examples, it is to test, re-design and repeat!
  • The three case studies we’ve sourced are inspiring examples of how engineering students’ skills can be applied in the world of work:
    • Deepsea Challenger: In 2012, James Cameron jumped into a custom-built submersible vehicle to descend the depths of the Mariana Trench. Nathan Burke from Design + Industry was on the team that designed the life-support sphere which encased the pilot, enabling him to survive the deepest trench in the world.
    • Morph Wheels: The first collapsible wheelchair wheel was invented initially for the cycling industry. Inventor Duncan Fitzsimons realised that it had the potential to serve another audience altogether, solving the very real problem of accessibility.
    • Fliteboard: David Trewerne loves surfing, so he developed a board that enabled him to enjoy the water even when there was no swell. Lead engineer on the project Lars Milde talks about the challenges involved in the design of the first battery-powered hydrofoil, invented in Byron Bay, Australia.
  • Accompanying resources will assist students in understanding the importance of each of the steps in the design process by asking them to practice them, too. They provide links to other real-world problems that have found engineering solutions, and offer the opportunity to evaluate their success.
  • Written by Nathaniel Moncrieff, produced by Sascha Karner, onlined by Rob Wilby, sound by Elliott Klein. Consultant: Peter Collins, Design and Technology teacher.

1984 mid-century texts

Literary Contexts: Mid-Century Texts

Audience: Middle to Senior Secondary
Subjects: English, Arts

  • Adding to our Literary Contexts from July and October, this time we’re taking a step back 50 years or so, and exploring the non-fictional mid-20th-century, as featured in fiction.
  • Students need an understanding of what the world was like around the 1950s in order to understand the significance of the context in the texts they are studying. This will lead to richer comprehension and allow for deep analysis of the intended purpose of the texts and their impact on the audience at the time of publication.
  • Mid-century is more than just sleek furniture and flat-roofed houses. This series takes us back to post-WWII and explores how the Allies’ relationship turned cold when the Stalinist regime took hold of Eastern Europe and the Red Scare had US citizens checking under their beds. Censorship and surveillance was rife and society was changing in a significant way.
  • These texts (2 novels and 1 film) are studied at length in senior secondary English, Literature and Media courses around the world:
    • 1984, George Orwell
    • Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
    • Rear Window, dir. Alfred Hitchcock
  • Consultant: Jill Pritchard, written by Nathaniel Moncrieff, produced by Edwina Baden-Powell, onlined by Rob Wilby, sound by Den Belmont.
